About: As the news broke that Michael Jackson had died, I worked with USA TODAY’s editors, reporters and multimedia producers to put together a video package that explained Jackson’s legacy and captured the public outpouring of emotion.

As senior video editor, I coordinated with a team of editors, video journalists and producers to create a package of five videos that approached the story from multiple angles. I also worked with the paper’s lead music critic to script and edit the featured retrospective piece that examined Michael Jackson’s career and influence on popular music and culture.

About: Madison County Project is a documentary film and companion web site that explores the ballad singing tradition in western North Carolina and the documentary photographers, filmmakers, and folklorists who documented that tradition. In this excerpt from the film, filmmaker and musicologist John Cohen remembers his visits to the mountains.

About: This video was part of the Great Eight 2007 package. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a Durham-based band that plays old-time music. We met them at the Wilson Library for a photo shoot. Afterward, they gave us an impromptu performance that blew us away. The video has become one of the most popular old-time music clips on YouTube.

About:N.C. State’s cinderella upset of Houston in the 1983 NCAA Championship Game is one of the seminal moments in sports history. For our package commerating the 25th anniversary of the title game, I produced this video of the memories of the News & Observer sports writers who covered the team that year.

Tyler’s Top Three Dunks

About: Tyler’s Top Three Dunks is a good example of creating multimedia by repurposing regular news assets. We cover UNC with photo and video all season. When our sports beat writer was able to sneak in a quick audio interview with Tar Heel center Tyler Hansbrough about his favorite dunks of the season, I was able to match it with photos and video. The resulting video proved to be a popular feature on the N&O site and on YouTube.

About: This video was part of the annual Great Eight project. I was one of two shooters on the video and the primary editor. The club where the band performed was lit by a single bulb, so we improvised and decided to shoot the video in black-and-white. Given the band’s neo-folk style, the decision turned out to be a good one.

About: This short video was produced for the multimedia documentary project Chiloe Stories. Produced with two Chilean students with no previous video experience, the video examines an effort to preserve the native language of a small island off the coast of Chile. While only a handful of native speakers of Huilliche remain, a school in the village of Molulco is revitalizing interest in the next generation.

About: I served as a producer and editor for FEMA’s coverage of response and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site. I was responsible for leading contract video crews and helped produce and edit a twice-daily satellite feed that was used by media outlets around the world.
