About: Madison County Project is a documentary film and companion web site that explores the ballad singing tradition in western North Carolina and the documentary photographers, filmmakers, and folklorists who documented that tradition. In this excerpt from the film, filmmaker and musicologist John Cohen remembers his visits to the mountains.
